In Grand Jump’s 24th issue, Shin'ichi Sakamoto announced that he will begin a new Dracula-inspired manga series early 2021—aptly titled: #DRCL Dracula Midnight Children.
There are few mangaka that I'd love to see reinterpret Bram Stoker's famous vampire novel more than Sakamoto. His artwork is lusciously gothic and detailed, and in my opinion, he's one of the few artists that can hold a candle to Eiko Ishioka's iconic costume design on the set of Dracula (1992).
I've mentioned Sakamoto in my manga licensing wishlist video, but in case you're not familiar with his previous work, Innocent is a historical drama based on the real-life Sanson family of executioners, beginning during the eve of the French Revolution.
You can imagine how grim and bloody of a tale that is.Sakamoto's proven that he's not afraid to shy away from blood, so vampires seem a perfect fit for him. This wouldn't be his first time dealing with vampires either. Earlier this year, Sakamoto and Usamaru Furuya collaborated together on a one-shot that follows a young vampire as she struggles with the loneliness of immortality.
All in all, I can’t wait to see his vision of Dracula and for English publishers to finally start licensing his works.
